"I can't do it anymore. I just can't do it anymore", Marianne says to Oskar. "Come on", he answers. These are the last words in the stage play Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald, by Ödön von Horváth, set to music by HK Gruber.
What happens next? We meet Marianne again a few years later. Austria is soon to face the so-called "Anschluss." The precursors of a disastrous future are arising. Marianne came along with her then fiancé Alfred. She is stuck in her own life, which she thought that she could escape with Alfred. Though her journey to happiness was short lived. Between her inner- self and the outside world, she brushes with her past and gradually finds her way to the present.
Petra Morzé empitomizedthe part of Marianne as a young actress under the direction of Karl-Heinz Hackl at the Viennese theatre "Theater in der Josefstadt” in 1994. As part of the current opera performance, Petra Morzé returns to the stage as the slightly older Marianne in the epilog "Fahrt ins Glück”. The young director Cornelia Rainer stages the text in her own visual language.
